Industry Analysts see the next big trend on mobile computing to bring payment and loyalty to mobile phones. The technology to support this new user experience is based on a simple tap using Near Field Communication (NFC).

For end-users this new way of payment is practical, easy and secure. Consumers pay small amounts (typically smaller than 25 Euros) by just tapping the phone on the payment terminal. In this “automatic payment mode” low value payment transactions will be accepted immediately without any further confirmation. A high value payment is either approved by means of using a PIN on the mobile phone, which requires a second tap or by entering the PIN on the payment terminal. The user can also change settings from automatic to “manual payment mode” which requires the PIN-entry also for small value payments.

SIX Payment Services and NEXPERTS are cooperating to implement standards and solutions based on contactless technologies (NFC) to enable customers in Switzerland to use their loyalty card and coupons in their mobile phones.

Both companies see a great potential in the use of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology in the near future. The typical wallet with banknotes, coins and a bunch of plastic cards will move to smart phones in form of electronic cash and virtual contactless cards. Kurt Schmid, CEO of NEXERTS claims that besides the well accepted contactless payment functions, loyalty and couponing applications on smart phones will create extra value for customers.

“The market for electronic loyalty cards and mobile coupons is steadily growing but there is a lack of standards for non-payment transactions”, states Thomas Landis, Senior Innovation Manager at SIX Payment Services. MasterCard and Visa, the dominating payment schemes set worldwide technical standards for the payment industry but there is no such driver in the loyalty marketplace.

SIX Payment Services and NEXPERTS joined forces to develop standards for contactless loyalty applications. SIX will implement the standard in their portfolio of NFC enabled Point of Sales Terminals whereas NEXPERTS is responsible for the integration into the mobile phones. NEXPERTS will focus on enhancing the SIM cards and Mobile Wallet functionality to complement the roll-out initiatives of mobile network operators in Switzerland.

Through this cooperation shoppers will be able to present their membership-, loyalty- and collecting cards as well as promotional coupons by a wave with their NFC smart phones on a contactless terminal from SIX in a practical and secure manner.

SIX is presently rolling out contactless terminals in Switzerland in large volumes and will support the acceptance side. First upgrades of loyalty functions are planned to be available by the end of this year.

The cooperation between SIX and NEXPERTS will bring the new technology to the majority of retailers in Switzerland. To promote a broad acceptance for all market participants, the technical specification shall be made available to other companies in this field in order to create an interoperable standard.

Telefonica has launched a mobile payments service based on the NFC technology in the Czech Republic. The operator is offering the service in partnership with the country’s GE Money Bank and MasterCard.

Telefonica subscribers who have the bank’s credit cards will be able to make payments using a number of NFC-based Android handsets at retail point-of-sale terminals which offer MasterCard’s PayPass technology.

Narvesen Baltija, a chain of 240 newsagent stores and kiosks across Latvia, launched the trial of a TCC retail marketing programusing NFC technology at 10 of its outlets in the capital Riga.

One thousand people registered to participate in the trial and were provided with an NFC-enabled sticker to attach to the back of their mobile phone or to place inside their purse or wallet. After creating a virtual account with Narvesen they were able to collect loyalty reward ‘stickers’ electronically rather than as paper-based labels collected in the traditional way. Upon registration shoppers were given a bonus of 10 reward points to start off their collection.

Once enough reward ‘stickers’ were collected participants were able to exchange these for a number of collectable BigHeadz Plush toys.

The programme, designed to increase shopper frequency and brand loyalty is the first of its kind in Latvia, which intrigued consumers and ensured the trial received the critical number of subscriptions to make it a success.

The results of the trial are promising and indicate that this type of ‘sticker’ collection and reward scheme is favourable to other methods of collection. Shoppers highlighted the benefits on their feedback proving that consumers are looking for a more portable, faster and convenient method of collecting rewards from retailers. The technology, which offered consumers a new experience, attracted interest from regular and less frequent shoppers, further cementing the brand in consumers’ minds as an innovative company, looking for ways to make it easier for their customers to shop and be rewarded.

In addition, the benefits as highlighted by Narvesen included faster payments and reduced queues, as well as cost and environmental savings.

Following the successful trial and feedback from Narvesen employees and consumers, TCC is working with Narvesen to move toward integrating the systems into all 240 stores POS, rather than using a standalone unit, paving the way for future branch-wide loyalty programmes across Narvesen Baltija in Lativa. TCC will also be offering this new technology to other retailers in Europe.
